algae photobioreactor (PBR) is a device that can contain and grow
algae. This self contained system is a controllable environment in
which to grow algae, and where the supply of light, nutrients, carbon
dioxide, air, and temperature can be regulated. See the section on Algae
more information on culture characteristics.
an algae photobioreactor is a totally enclosed system it is generally
more expensive than an open
system. However, there are
advantages as the bioreactor can prevent or at least minimise
contamination (from other algae species and bugs), and allows easier
cultivation of one algae strain. It also offers better control over a
range of other growing
conditions, like the pH, light,
carbon dioxide, and temperature. In addititon to this a closed system
reduces evaporative water losses, and has lower carbon dioxide
which all-in-all means higher cell concentrations. In other words there
are more grams of algae produced per litre of water.
of the products that can be grown in these systems is Spirulina,
which is thought to have been a food source for the Aztecs and other
Mesoamericans. Cortés' soldiers even described the
harvesting and sale of algal cakes from Lake Texcoco. More recently at
a UN World Food Conference, Spirulina was lauded as the 'best food for
the future' and a number of Aid agencies are providing high protein
algae powder mixed with flour to starving people. NASA and the European
Space Agency have also indicated that Spirulina might be one of the
primary foods to be grown during long space missions. Lately in the
news there are reports that NASA and a commercial company are exploring
the process of making biofuels from algae.

having an algae
photobioreactor in your garage, able to grow algae for bio-oil for your

Think about it. The "algae

Bonus Gift #1:
The PBR Book of Patents:
wonder what the big boys are doing, and how they build their PBR's? I
don't. I periodically check the online patent office. Now you don't
have to because I did it for you.
While this information is free online, if you wanted to buy if from a
vendor, it would cost
you $50 a month or more!
Bonus Gift #2:
PBR Diary:" This show
my actual results using the same PBR's I built for this eBook. You get
what strains I used, where I got them, the nutrient used, the light
regimen, and full color photographs showing rates of algae growth. Cost:
No one else is sharing this knowledge!
Bonus Gift #3:
Online Resource List: This
"Quick Guide" shows you where to go online to buy every part/resource
necessary for building PBR's. (Including
every place overseas you can buy algal cultures!)
useful for overseas buyers and/or people living in places where they
don't have access to resources we have in the USA. Cost:
PRICELESS time saver if you're living overseas and have to shop by
internet or deal with customs/importing issues.
Bonus Gift #4:
The Shopping list:
every PBR presented, This bonus has a shopping list, including number
of units to buy, where to buy them, parts number, and price. Including
handy "check off's" so you know exactly what you've bought. This
makes shopping for parts and components a breeze! Cost: PRICELESS if
your time is worth anything. This cures the problem of the time,
trouble, and aggravation of not buying the right parts, not enough
parts, or the wrong parts.
Bonus Gift #5:
Updates: This book
isn't finished... And until it is early buyers will receive
free updates. Ask anyone who has bought David’s previous
material... For instance, we sent out free updates on the Algae
