Algae to Ethanol

Algae to Ethanol - This is really quite a world's first! This book is a "how to" manual on the processes around algae to ethanol conversion. It was written to provide investors and other interested people a glimpse inside this new approach which has potential to be a gold mine industry. This is sophisticated look at how to make ethanol at small and large-scale production levels. You will learn why this new technology is important to our global energy future.

The largest single use of ethanol is as a motor fuel and fuel additive and Brazil has the largest national industry. Ethanol as a fuel reduces harmful tailpipe emissions of carbon monoxide, particulates, and other ozone forming pollutants.

World production of ethanol in 2006 was about 51 gigalitres with 69% of the world supply coming from Brazil and the United States. More than 20% of Brazilian cars are able to use 100% ethanol as fuel, which includes ethanol-only engines and flex-fuel engines. Flex-fuel engines in Brazil are able to work with all ethanol, all gasoline or any mixture of both. In the US flex-fuel vehicles can run on anything up to 85% ethanol (15% gasoline) since higher ethanol blends are not yet allowed or efficient. Brazil supports ethanol-burning vehicles with its large national infrastructure that produces ethanol from domestically grown sugar cane. Sugar cane not only has a greater concentration of sucrose than corn (by about 30%), but is also much easier to extract.

In the United States, it is believed that a material portion of the 150-billion-US-gallon per year market for gasoline fuel will begin to be replaced with ethanol. The United States fuel ethanol industry is largely based on corn, but now there is opportunity for new feed stocks, like algae.

This book is written for entrepreneurs and small business owners, by David Sieg, an entrepreneur and small business owner. He has tried to answer the questions he himself asks, in his own algae production consulting business. The book is written for professionals and forward thinking individuals looking to cash in on the "Algae Revolution."
